Lake Atitlan

Ju es crasy-typical spanish greeting from los ninos! This is Haley and Rachel blogging about our truly AWEful day:) It started off when the roosters started to crow..literally...6 am. We had our usual breakfast of pancakes, fresh bread, cereal, amazing Guatemalan coffee-I am drinking it becuase it is amazing here!(rachel), and fresh fruit. Then we boarded three vans to take us to the lake. Let's just say it wasn't an easy two and a half hour ride, many people felt a little sick,  and Guatemalan driving is way more risky than American driving. We passed many mudslides from rain the night before, making our ride stop and go, AND bumpy, pero esta bien. We've never been that high up before! We could touch the clouds and see for miles on end. We were all happy to finally arrive at the B-E-A-UTIFUL lake and its surrouding city and landscapes. Words and pictures said and taken cannot even begin to describe what everyone was feeling and experiencing at that moment and throughout the day. Then we boarded two  boats to travel across the lake and to a different city. Here we witness the most magnificent views of the 5 volcanos and learned about the Mayan culture. The moment we stepped off the boats, someone told them to look up and the sun had a perfect rainbow ring around it. Wow. It was the most amazing thing we have ever seen, hands down. Amongst the street vendors and day to day hussle of the city, we witnessed countless stray dogs roaming around, looking for somebody to love-don't worry family, as hard as it was for me, I knew not to pet them(haley)! After listening to the extremely passionate and knowledgable tour guide, we experienced the overwhelming presence of God in their Church. Let's just say the overwhelming presence of God became the overwhelmig presence of vendors-once again, I cannot barter with innocent little native women with their families, causing me to pay full price, even after bargaining(rachel)! Then another boat trip, only this time I (rachel) almost hopped clear over the boat-Judy, don't worry I saved her (Haley)! Jajajajaja (Spanish laugh the j is silent). Another insanely brutal car ride, with una siesta (a nap), was quickly forgotten with the children's welcoming smiles and laughs. It was amazing at how we all caught ourselves saying, 'We're home'. We spent the night eating rice and cucumbers, playing soccer, talking to the girls, dancing to Thriller with all of the children. Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better, we enjoyed the nature with our daily devotions outside, truly experiencing God's presence amongst the group. Buenos Noches for now, te amo! :)

  1. Rachel, Lovey ( ie. Greg) had no torture this time losing his tooth, came right out!! BIG BIG BIG news. WE CAUGHT THE FOX!!!!! Klingel brought his trap over and we outsmarted the sly fox who ate our baby ducks with pork chops and honey. Connie took him safely to a wildlife refuge far from our little culdesac.

  3. Hello Side By Side Family! I love you all dearly! Keep the blog updates coming. I love living vicariously though you :)
Judges 8:4 speaks about how Gideon and his men were "...exhausted yet pursuing."
You guys are doing a lot of work and I am sure you are tired... if not exhausted. I just wanted to encourage you to take from Gideon's example and continue pushing through your exhaustion to pursue the Lords work. Whatever project you are working on ... work on it with passion and enthusiasm. And LOVE those kids with a love that is beyond any language barrier.

Love you lots! PRAYING FOR YOU!!!
